Many years ago, we visited the Plitvice Lakes in Croatia. Achim watched some kind of funky German western-esque movies as a kid, and those were filmed partially in the Plitvice Lakes National Park (because of course, a German "western" that supposedly took place in the USA west but was written by an Author who had never been there, should be filmed in Croatia). LOL Anyway - our visit took place on a day enshrouded in fog with rain all day. (see the first picture below). So we saw very little and it was a short stay. Hence, the decision to make a 300km detour to try again on our way through Croatia. It was worth the detour! :)
First disclaimer: this is a very touristy place that has been highly built up and is on everyone's "must see" list. Second: it is pricey, with tickets costing 40€ per person for a day entrance (plus parking, which for our Giraffe was 17€). Third: we don't really like crowds - we prefer far-out-there nature experiences where we can enjoy the surroundings in peace.
BUT...the lakes are amazing. The hundreds of waterfalls, cascading from one level of turquoise lakes into the next. The lush green vegetation surrounding the crystal-clear waters. The rustic wooden walkways between lakes and streams. It is simply beautiful. The key to enjoying it all: arrive when it opens at 7am! We had a good 2.5 hours with very few people. And by the time the crowds were in full onslaught, we were wrapping up our visit and heading back towards our starting point. Perfect!
